Snow is late this year. Usually it’s possible to ski by Christmas. Not in 2022. People were skiing on narrow strips of artificial snow surrounded by brown all around them. I’m not going into climate change here. Snow is here and it is absolutely delightful! I’m a kid again – not that I grew up with snow. The only snow I’ve seen were in Christmas cards. Until today when I chance upon a tiny snow-bound village like Bergün, I think I’ve walked into a Christmas card scene.
There is something about snow that signals play to both children and adults. When the boys were at primary school, the first snowfall always brings the reminder letter from the school principal – that children don’t throw snow through open windows! It seems that was a thing for school children. A trick I can’t resist is waiting for my unsuspecting companion to walk under a snow laden branch. A quick tug and he gets the entire forecasted snowfall on his head in seconds! Luckily he still finds it funny.
There is nothing more magical than watching snow fall! I am sitting by the window in my favourite restaurant called HILTL, café crème on hand while writing this. Big fat flakes swirling down. The fatter the flake, the slower it falls. The snow is not settling yet but forecast is 3-6” of snow. I know I will wake up to white out! Then get the boys out the door quick as I can, snow boots on and bundle up. The crunching snow underfoot, the crisp air, the sound of branches breaking at the weight of the snow and the cascading snow, it’s magical. Just like – yes – that Christmas card of old!
